Frieze co-founders Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover have announced that they are launching two new Frieze fairs beginning in 2012, on the 10th anniversary of Frieze Art Fair, London.
Frieze New York will be held in Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan, from 3–6 May 2012. Like Frieze Art Fair, which takes place in London’s royal Regent’s Park, Frieze New York will also be housed in a bespoke, temporary structure overlooking the natural beauty of it’s metropolis home – the backdrop of New York City’s Waterfront. This evening, at 8pm, on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row and BBC TWO The Culture Show, news of the four museums and galleries that have been short listed for ‘Museum of the Year’ 2011 will be announced. Last year’s winner was The Ulster Museum, Belfast. The competition aims to recognise originality in museums and galleries within the UK, and increase their public appreciation.

Ai Weiwei is an artist, curator, architectural designer and social activist. He is China’s most successful contemporary artist. In Europe, he is perhaps best known for his overwhelming Sunflower Seeds installation at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, which ended earlier this month on 2 May. More recently, however, he has topped news channels because of his ongoing ambiguous disappearance. On 3 April, Weiwei returned to his home country but was detained by security at Beijing airport and has been missing ever since. There are only a few days left of this vast and significant exhibition that has toured the States (Ohio, San Francisco, Dallas and Chicago) before its home coming to Belgium, Luc Tuymans’ native country. The artist’s last major European exhibition was a solo show in 2004 at Tate Modern. He is regarded as one of the most important artists of the contemporary art world, considered to have re-invented history painting and re-vitalised figurative art at a time when it was deemed obsolete. It is particularly significant that Belgium hosts Tuyman's first major retrospective because his work scrutinises their history....

Wood carving flourished in Southern Germany in the late 15th century onwards, resulting in exquisitely crafted devotional sculptures. Today, these figures and reliefs may be found for as little as £5,000, though the best examples command high prices.
