Apollo at Masterpiece: Day 2 & 3

Sofie Shaw, Saturday, 2nd July 2011

As we commence the weekend, Masterpiece continues to attract a constant stream of traffic, both buyers and general art lovers.

Yesterday evening it was announced that Sims Reed Gallery, renowned for modern masterpieces as well as contemporary graphics and works on paper, has succeeded in the sale of a Joan Miro, whose retrosective continues at Tate Modern, London, until 11 September. Trace sur la Paroi III was sold for £20,000.

Lefevre Gallery is offering a number of vivid watercolours by English artist Edward Burra (1905-1976). Particularly eye-catching is a highly atmospheric depiction of the 1930s New York jazz scene, Savoy Ballroom, Harlem (1934) (pictured above), which is on offer for £2m. Two paintings by Burra broke record auction prices for his work at the Sotheby’s Evill/Frost sale two weeks ago.

As well as talks and events run by Masterpiece, Apollo is supporting the Vacheron lecture, which will be taking place on Tuesday at 7pm. 80 tickets have already been sold and can be bought here.

The fair is open to the public until 5 July at South Grounds of The Royal Hospital Chelsea, London SW3, and is supported by Apollo.

Wood carving flourished in Southern Germany in the late 15th century onwards, resulting in exquisitely crafted devotional sculptures. Today, these figures and reliefs may be found for as little as £5,000, though the best examples command high prices.
