Apollo at MASTERPIECE: Private View

Nicola McCartney, Thursday, 30th June 2011

In its second year, Masterpiece art fair, supported by Apollo, is already a glittering success. Yesterday’s preview opened to top dealers, museum curators and celebrities, including Uma Thurman, Sir Elton John and Sir Paul Smith, who were welcomed with unlimited Ruinart champagne, a sponsor of the fair. Sales are also soaring on extraordinary pieces, such as a diamond Cartier brooch, two Japanese screens and two series of works by David LaChapelle. This is a testament to the success of exhibiting master works of art, from antiquity to contemporary, side by side.

Highlights include Masterpiece’s ‘Object of The Fair’, a pair of Florentine carved marble groups exhibited by Tomasso Brothers (see above). The giant lion and horse, and lion and bull, are attributed to Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652–1725) and his workshop, after models by Giovanni Bologna. Extraordinarily, these Baroque sculptures were discovered by the brothers in a Yorkshire house, and have a provenance dating back to the 19th Century.

Today the fair opened to the public and maintains a constant stream of traffic. Updates to follow. . .

The fair is open until 5 July at the South Grounds of The Royal Hospital Chelsea, London SW3, and is supported by Apollo.

Wood carving flourished in Southern Germany in the late 15th century onwards, resulting in exquisitely crafted devotional sculptures. Today, these figures and reliefs may be found for as little as £5,000, though the best examples command high prices.
