Apollo Book Competition

For our last competition, we offered you the chance to win The Hockemeyer Collection: 20th Century Italian Ceramic Art’ by Gillo Dorfles and Lisa Hockemeyer (Hirmer Verlag, 85,00). ‘The Hockemeyer Collection’ brings together 23 of the most important artists of Italy between the late ‘20s and mid-‘80s, including Lucio Fontana, Roberto Crippa and ceramic artists such as Pietro Melandri, Guido Gambone, Marcello Fantoni and Pompeo Pianezzola. Lisa Hockemeyer calls for a debate so that the work of these artists, whose innovative and challenging ceramics made up almost a fifth of all Italian exports during the 1950s, can be recognised. She also offers a cultural historical context to the artists’ work, reminding us that the ceramic-making tradition has existed since ancient times, reaching its apogee in the Renaissance. Each work is individually annotated and illustrated with exquisite large-format colour photographs.

We asked you: In what country was Lucio Fontana born?

Answer: Argentina

Congratulations to David Bowcock, winner of this competition, drawn at random from the hundreds of correct answers we received.

This week's competition prize is ‘Masters of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism: The Annenberg Collection’ by Colin Bailey, Joseph Rishel and Mark Rosenthal (Yale, £40.00). The Walter H. and Leonore Annenberg Collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, watercolours and drawings constitutes one of the most remarkable gifts ever made to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. This revised and expanded version of the original catalogue, published two decades ago, includes 100 full colour illustrations of over 50 masterpieces by 18 of the greatest artists of the period. Signature subjects such as Degas’s dancers, Gauguin’s Tahitians and Picasso’s harlequin are discussed with insightful texts by leading experts in the field.

For your chance to win, simply answer the following question and submit your details below before midday on 29th July:
